We started arguing about it

I like being with you.

I was unsettled, hearing her speak like this.

Gracey told Cheryl what she wanted to do, choosing her words carefully.

“I want to do this, Angela”, she continued, convincing herself.

“OK now. Income”, she said, writing the word at the top of the column.

She went to work on the rest of column, repeating each item slowly.

Mum started again at the top of the list, working out an amount.

“You’ll have to get a job”, Mum said, being very careful not to make this sound like “I told you so”
